A Los Lunas man is charged with aggravated drunk driving after police say he caused a multiple car crash in Los Lunas last week.

Los Lunas Magistrate Court records say Hector Moreno, 30, is charged with aggravated DWI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death, improper display of registration, no insurance, criminal damage to property, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and open container.

His bond has been set at $10,000, and he has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A Los Lunas police report shows officers were responding to the call of a wrong way driver on Highway 314 on July 22.

While en route, dispatch notified the officers that the driver had crashed at the intersection of Highway 314 and Main Street.

Officers observed three disabled vehicles at the intersection, and a man, later identified as Moreno, attempting to leave the scene. Officers placed Moreno, who the police report says was slurring his words and smelled of alcohol, in the back of a cruiser.

A driver of one of the other cars involved in the crash told police he was about to drive through the intersection when Moreno's truck sped through a red light.

The man was unable to avoid hitting Moreno, who then crashed into a third car, pinning the driver inside. Emergency personnel were forced to cut the driver out of his vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle told police he saw the crash coming and tried to warn the driver, but it was too late. The driver and passenger both required hospitalization for their injuries.

According to the police report, officers found beer pooled on the floor of Moreno's vehicle, and a beer can rolled out the door and onto the pavement. Officers located marijuana and a pipe inside the vehicle, the report shows.

Officers transported Moreno to police headquarters, where he said his friend had yanked on the steering wheel and caused the crash.

He could not name his friend for quite some time, and did not know where he lived, the report states.

Police were unable to conduct a field sobriety test on Moreno because he could barely stand inside the police station but a breath test revealed he had an alcohol concentration consistent with aggravated DWI. The police report said that he told officers that he was smoking marijuana during his drive to Los Lunas.

Moreno was taken to the Valencia County Detention Center and booked.
