TOMÉ—Soup R Bowl XII will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Student Community Center at UNM-Valencia campus.

The event, which began as a small, grassroots fundraiser in the pottery studio at the Tomé Art Gallery, has outgrown several spaces and is now being held at the Student Community Center at the university.

This year, we will be featuring five international soup stations, with soups made by gallery volunteers in the professional kitchen at the campus. Homemade breads and desserts will be donated by gallery and community members.

Handmade pottery bowls and tickets are available for sale at the Tomé Art Gallery, 2930 N.M. 47 in Tomé, at the UNM-Valencia Bookstore, and will be available at both the gallery and the university the day of the event.

Tickets can be purchased for $15 each, which includes a handmade bowl of your choice as well as soup, bread and dessert. The silent auction features many handmade items, artwork and donations from local businesses.

All proceeds benefit the Virginia Casados-Clark Scholarship, the James Vaughn Memorial Scholarship, the Nancy Deas Memorial Scholarship and the James Taylor Memorial Scholarship. This year, each award will be $1,000, given to deserving students in the fine arts, media arts and humanities.

There are several sponsorships for the soups, including the Walmart Distribution Center, which is sponsoring two soups; Romero Funeral Home is sponsoring one soup; and Sopa’s Restaurant and Hub City Brewing Company are both donating soups.

Many gift certificates have been donated by local businesses for the silent auction, including The Center For Ageless Living, Teofilos, Burritos Alinstante, Rutilio’s in Belen, Alicia’s Fine Jewelry, as well as amazing art work from many local artists.

This is fast becoming one of the most popular events to take place in the county. The bowls are beautiful, the food is amazing and there is plenty of room to sit and enjoy the afternoon and still be home in time for the big game.
