A man fired at least one shot in an unsuccessful attempt to stop a carjacking on Meadow Lake Road yesterday afternoon.

Valencia County Sheriff’s Detective Ben Lankasky said at about 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 18, at least one shot was fired at an individual who was attempting to steal a vehicle driven by a woman.

The individual was able to take the vehicle and flee the area before officers arrived.

“We do not have evidence anyone was injured and no reason to believe there is an active threat to the community,” Lankasky said Thursday afternoon. “We have every reason to believe at this time the shot fired was by a concerned citizen attempting to stop the carjacking but he was not successful.”

Lankasky said at this time they have not identified the person who took the vehicle and there are no charges filed at this time against the man who fired the gun.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” he said.

The incident took place east of the intersection of Meadow Lake Road and Manzano Expressway, and caused the closure of Meadow Lake Road for several hours. Students at nearby schools — Valencia and Ann Parish elementaries — were kept on campus, as well as students who live in the area and were at other schools until the road reopened.
