At the six-month anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Belen memorial coordinator Gloria Sanchez is spearheading an archival file at the Belen Library where community members can contribute their thoughts about 9-11.
“We are establishing a file at the library to archive the children’s and adult’s response to this national tragedy,” Sanchez said. “We are encouraging people to take their essays, drawings, poetry depicting their feelings about 9-11 to the library to be kept for future generations.”
“We have been working to develop a local history section here at the library,” said Librarian Beverly McFarland. “We are inviting people to bring their work to us, and we are inviting the community to come and read their works.”
Superintendent of Belen Schools Don Duran has sent a memo to his staff letting them know of the archive and encouraging the teachers to their student’s material to the public library.
McFarland added that, additionally, her staff is in need of high school yearbooks from the 1980s. “We seem to be missing those years in this wonderful pictorial archive.”
