Tony Furtado is a gypsy king.

Congert-goers at the Launch Pad enjoyed a medley of live music from the charismatic performer in honor of his newly released “American Gypsy” CD.

The small, intimate setting allowed the personable Furtado to play more than just a few tunes from his new 13-track album. Accessible and laid back, the singer unleashed a collection of blues, jazz and folk numbers.

Dancing to the beat of his music, the eclectic Launch Pad crowd, consisting of college couples and other bohemians, swayed to the fluid style of Furtado during such songs as “The Angry Monk,” “Bottle of Hope” and “Promise of A Better Day.”

A relaxed vibe blanketed the club, allowing Furtado’s Celtic music influence to stand out in “Tinker’s Fancy.” Although the songs were almost too mellow at times, the jazzy singer picked up the pace with his electric guitar in songs such as “Rising Fog” and “Kentucky Stripmine.”

In between sets, the friendly Furtado stopped to sign autographs and sell CDs. He took time to talk with fans and meet those who were listening to his music for the first time.

While his bluesy vocals and lush melodies might not be the rage of today’s rock scene, “American Gypsy” is worth a listen. Yes, the fine-tuned Furtado makes an effort to grab your attention.

Furtado says he thinks his “American Gypsy” album is similar to what he does on stage. “But I think the live show’s a little more intense,” the singer has reported.

“The audience is really diverse, from kids who want to rock out to older folkies. But I think it’s basically people who appreciate good tunes.”

I would in no way classify Tony Furtado as “intense.” Listening to him play is like engaging in a unique musical experiment. Think Latin, Cajun, jazz, swing and Celtic influences all mixed together. And, although he probably isn’t on your must-see list, seeing this expressive performer play live is an experience in diversity.

A sweet ending to the show came when Furtado asked the crowd to gather close around him near the stage. A quiet hush fell over the audience as he sang an acoustic blues number.

Those who appreciate Furtado’s style of folk, jazz melodies and guitar mastery will certainly follow the experienced performer and watch him grow.

Furtado says he plans to continue touring tirelessly across the country in order to reach more of his loyal grassroots following.
