A Valencia County road crew discovered the body of a woman Tuesday morning while doing routine maintenance on a remote county road.

Valencia County Sheriff’s Office Lt. James Harris said the crew discovered the body between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. on July 2.

“There are suspicious circumstances,” Harris said. “We are investigating this as a homicide.”

The woman, the lieutenant said, was between 5 feet and 5 feet, 5 inches tall, but he couldn’t offer any other information about possible age or ethnicity.

The body was found on AT&T Road, which is about two miles south of N.M. 6 on the mesa west of the village of Los Lunas.

“The investigation is still preliminary. We don’t want to release inaccurate information, or information that may jeopardize the case,” Harris said. “We do not have an ID at this time, and official manner and cause of death is still pending from (Office of Medical Investigation).”

If anyone has information about this case, they can contact VCSO Detective Bert Lopez at 866-2400.
