With the Valencia County treasurer soon to be sworn in as the Division III magistrate, Valencia County commissioners are calling for letters of interest from residents interested in filling the position until 2024.

Treasurer Deseri Sichler, a Republican, won her bid for the Valencia County Magistrate Division III seat earlier this month, and will be stepping down at the end of the year to take on a new role on the bench.

The position of treasurer is countywide, so any Valencia County resident is eligible to submit a letter of interest.

The letters of interest are due by 3:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 28.

They can be hand delivered to the county manager’s office, 444 Luna Ave., Los Lunas; sent by email to [email protected], or mailed to Valencia County Manager, P.O. Box 1119, Los Lunas, NM, 87031.

An appointment will be made by the Valencia County Commission at a special meeting at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 29. The appointee will take office on Jan. 1, 2023.

The treasurer is in charge of the safekeeping and investment of all county funds.

Duties of the treasurer also include mailing out more than 200,000 property tax bills every year and receiving payment for those, as well as miscellaneous other county receipts.

Property taxes collected by the treasurer’s office are disbursed to the state of New Mexico, village of Los Lunas, city of Belen, village of Bosque Farms, town of Peralta and city of Rio Communities, as well as the Los Lunas Schools, Belen Consolidated School district, the University of New Mexico-Valencia campus, Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District and Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District.

The treasurer does not determine the assessed valuation of property, the tax rate or the amount of taxes due.

The treasurer’s office also collects all fees imposed by the county.
