All three of Valencia County’s entries in the District 5 Little League major division baseball playoffs were in contention headed into Tuesday night’s games.
Enchantment and Yucca, both 3-0 in the tournament, were scheduled to play Tuesday at the Zia Little League diamonds in Albuquerque (no score was available at News-Bulletin press time).
On Friday, Yucca shut out Belen, 5-0, and Enchantment blanked Mile High, 6-0, to set-up the final of the championship bracket. Enchantment’s win was the third shut out of the tourney. The Los Lunas squad outscored its opponents 34-0 entering Tuesday’s game.
Belen’s loss to Yucca sent them to the bottom bracket where they edged Thunderbird, 8-7, on Monday. Belen advanced to play a scheduled game against Mile High on Tuesday.
In the junior baseball division at Zia, Yucca continued to get strong pitching and advanced to face Socorro in a semifinal slated for Tuesday night. The winner moved on to the championship, to be played at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, while the loser has to play again Wednesday for a berth in the finals.
In softball action, Enchantment’s senior division team beat Mile High, 7-2, on Monday to advance to the championship. Enchantment will meet an undetermined opponent for the district title at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Zia. If it wins, Enchantment will advance to the state tournament. Should Enchantment lose, it will play another game against the same team at 6 p.m. for the state tournament berth.
While Enchantment’s senior team is trying to wrap up a spot in the state playoffs, the junior team is just getting started. The Enchantment juniors played their first game of the tournament on Monday and beat Atrisco. Enchantment will next play either South Valley or Mile High at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Mile High fields in Albuquerque.
