David Walter Sonnenberg

David Walter Sonnenberg

1950-2022

David Walter “Dave” Sonnenberg, a long time resident of Los Lunas, passed away Friday, May 13, at the age of 71.

David is survived by his high school sweetheart of 51 years, Nellie; daughter, Tamra; son, DJ and wife, LeeAnn; and four grandchildren, Jaidyn, Lil’ D, Jacob and Olivia.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Pauline Sonnenberg; and sister, Paulette Sonnenberg.

David was born on Oct. 4, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio (Go Browns!) and moved to Los Chavez in the early 1960s and graduated from Belen High School.

Instead of taking the bus to school, David thought the fastest way to class was to ride his motorcycle down the halls; he was somewhat of a bad boy when he decided to go to school!

A young David pursued a career in the construction industry, one of his many talents. It was something that came natural to him with his exceptional knowledge, skilled craftsmanship and great confidence. With David’s hard work and dedication, he quickly became the best in the business!

He finally retired from Innerspace Systems as a general superintendent in 2009. What made David happiest was the homes he built, his soulmate Nellie, and his “little family.” David couldn’t have loved them more.

David enjoyed coaching and watching his kids and grandkids activities and sporting events. David was always the first one to the field and the last one to leave. He also enjoyed softball, bowling, hunting, fishing, camping, watching football and visiting the local Home Depot and McDonald’s.

David was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who knew no strangers. He was loved by all.  With his big personality, heart of gold and witty sense of humor, people were drawn to him. He will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held at 9 a.m., Thursday, May 26, at San Clemente Catholic Church in Los Lunas, a Rosary at 9:30 a.m., and  a memorial service at 10 a.m.  burial will take place later.

A reception will follow services at the Thome Dominguez Community Center, 2933 N.M. 47.
