The 50th class reunion of the La Joya Independent Rural High School Class of 1952 was held on May 22.

Father Vincent Nicosia celebrated a Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and a reception followed at the Luna Mansion.

In May of 1952, Father Nicosia was going through New Mexico on his way from New York to California. He is now the pastor of the church, reported Marcelo Abeyta, a member of the class.

Class officers were Carmel Sanchez, president; Johnny Griego, vice president; Edwinda Griego, secretary; and Fela Romero, treasurer.

The class consisted of Marcelo Abeyta, Fey Cordova, Leo Cordova, Edwina Greigo, Johnny Griego, Mary Lovato, Fela Romero, Carmel Sanchez and Isidro Ulibarri.

“This is a unique class reunion since all the class roll is alive,” Abeyta wrote.

T.C. Jaramillo was superintendent of schools and H.B. Cordova was principal. Board members were Arsenio Baca, president; Juan C. Padilla, secretary; and Jose Maria Garcia, Baltazar Griego and Jose Baca, members. Martha Carangelo was the librarian and her assistant was Karen Brewer.

The class motto was “In ourselves the future lies” and class colors were green and gold. Class flower was the white carnation.
