Fermin George Chavez Jr.

1954-2022

Fermin George Chavez Jr.

Fermin George Chavez Jr., age 68, was called to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022, with his family at his bedside.

There will be a visitation at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with a Rosary to be recited at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 2 p.m.

George was raised in Tomé. He was a 1972 graduate of Los Lunas High School and a 1977 graduate of New Mexico State University, where he majored in science and agriculture.

After living and working in Nebraska for seven years, he returned to New Mexico, where he was married to Teresa Ann Leaton, the love of his life, of Roswell, on May 25, 1985. After marriage, George and Teresa had two children and raised his family in Tomé, where he was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

George was an avid traveler and made numerous cross-country road trips with his wife, making frequent visits to Yellowstone, drives up and down the east and west coasts, and many visits of historical sites in between. He loved everything outdoors — hunting, fishing, camping and riding horses. George especially loved elk hunting and riding his horse, Cimarron, which he often enjoyed with his daughter, Amy.

He loved his grandchildren, and would make trips often to see them. He would tell his wife that he missed them.

George worked for the Department of Agriculture NRCS for 37 years, and held various technical managerial positions before his retirement in 2013. He was especially fond of the Los Angeles Dodgers and baseball, and would often enjoy discussing the sport with his son, Joshua, and anyone else who would discuss his team.

George is preceded in death by his father, Fermin George Chavez; and his niece, Deanna Chavez.

He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Teresa Chavez; mother, Sally Chavez; brothers, Bernard (Mardee), Jerome (Holly) and Clarence Chavez (Lynn); sisters, Della Willis (Jerry) and Jackie Ross (Derrick); two loving children, Joshua (Catherine) and Amy Brainard (Jesse); and his grandchildren, Dareon, Dante and Sienna Brainard, and Grace and Benjamin Chavez, and newborn baby Chavez, who is due to arrive anytime now.
