You didn’t quite use up that nail polish remover and you want to get rid of it. You didn’t take all of the liquid medicine prescribed for you during that bout with the flu last winter. How do you get rid of them?

The City of Belen is joining with Advanced Environmental Solutions to come up with a way to help people clean out their homes and, at the same time, do what’s right for our environment. Our water supply is precious in this semi-arid environment, and we need to ensure that what we have stays clean and usable.

Use the information on Page 3A of this edition of the News-Bulletin to gather together products at your home that you’d like to get rid of, and participate in the Oct. 5 cleanup event.

Now might be a good time to ask questions and try to do what’s right for all of us. We understand this is the first time that such a large-scale operation has been planned in the county.

Perhaps in the future we can set aside a weekend a month for recycling of such materials. It’s easy to just pour things out into the soil, but it could be tragic for our children.

We salute the city and this civic-minded business for thinking about something that can benefit all of us.

It would be a good lesson to have your children help you scout out things from the shed, under the kitchen sink and in the garage. Be sure to supervise them carefully because some of these products can be dangerous.
