I had gotten up from bed in Belen, walked into the kitchen, passing through the door from the dining room, and, as I did, I spoke verbally to no one in the room, “Happy anniversary, Roberta,” then turned on the television.
The first tower was burning and smoking furiously. Seconds later, the second tower exploded as I saw the plane come in from the left of the screen.
Sept. 11, 2001, was my 36th wedding anniversary! I celebrated it alone, watching the tragedy unfold.
