1935-2023

Helen T. Goodson, age 87, a resident of Belen, peacefully passed away in her home surrounded by her loved ones on May 3, 2023.

Services will take place on Monday, May 22, 2023, at Romero Funeral Home Chapel beginning with a visitation at 10 a.m., followed by a celebration of life at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Terrace Grove Cemetery at a later date.

She was born in 1935 in Cortez, Colo. Helen, a self-proclaimed Army brat, moved around the country with her parents and younger sister, Gio, from base to base. She married her soulmate, Ray, in 1954 and raised three boys in Belen.

Helen and Ray worked side by side farming and later owning a ditch-lining business until Ray’s death in 1991. She went on to be a pilot car driver and especially enjoyed driving with her sons, Ken and Jim.

Helen enjoyed playing board games and reading books, a trait she passed on to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Ken Goodson (Jackie), of Belen; sister, Gio Szuch, of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Lorie Goodson, of Austin, Texas; six granddaughters, two grandsons, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her loving husband, Raymond Goodson; parents, Edward and Martha Mertz Thompkins; and sons, Jim and Don Goodson.
