Time is running out for people to be involved with the Belen Hospital Memorial Walkway.
“We would like to capture the history of the old hospital by remembering the people who used the facility for many years,” said Superintendent Don Duran of the facility which was demolished to make room for a new Belen School District administrative office building. “The hospital holds many memories for our community that we need to preserve.”
To memorialize those family members and friends, the school district is creating a memorial walkway. Community members are invited to place the names of their loved ones on bricks for $25. Each brick will be approximately 4-inches-by-eight-inches, and the lettering will be stamped in ink. Each brick will be able to have two lines with up to 13 characters each.
“The profits from the sale of the bricks will be used to commission a local artist to design a sculpture that will capture the community’s memories of this important building in our community,” Duran said. “The sculpture will be located near the entrance to our new building.”
Deadline for submitting requests is Oct. 15. Mail the donation and the message for each brick to Belen Consolidated Schools, 520 Main Street, Belen, 87002, attention: Belen Hospital Memorial Walkway.
