The Belen Eagles boys basketball team will be hosting the Hub City Tournament beginning Thursday and running through Saturday, Dec. 11.

The Belen varsity and junior varsity teams will be participating, along with Valley, Miyamura, Centennial, Thoreau, Mayfield and Santa Fe high schools.

Belen has had a good start to the season, with a runner-up finish in the Sandia Prep Tournament with wins over St. Pius and Bernalillo, and other wins over Sandia Prep and Manzano. The Eagles will be looking to build on their early success with this weekend’s tournament.

The Eagles will be the night-capper when they open up on Thursday night at 6 p.m. against their own junior varsity squad. The JV team has wins over Sandia Prep’s and Manzano’s junior varsity teams so far this season.

The opening game of the tournament will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday between Valley and Miyamura.

The Valley Vikings will come into the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record on the season.

Valley has beaten West Mesa, Organ Mountain and Eldorado to date, and will be looking for more success against the Miyamura Patriots.

The Patriots have had a rough start to their season, losing four games in the early season. The Patriots lost all three of their contests in the City of Champions Tournament in Artesia last weekend, finishing eighth in the competition.

The second contest of the tournament is slated for 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, between Centennial and Thoreau. The Centennial Hawks will come into the tournament with a 1-4 record on the season.

The Hawks lone win on the season came against Roswell. Their four losses were to Chapin High in El Paso, Santa Fe, Atrisco Heritage and, most recently, to Albuquerque High. Three of their four losses have been by 18-points or more.

The Thoreau Hawks are off to a solid start to their 2021-22 season.

The Hawks won the Laguna Acoma Hawk Classic this past weekend. Scoring  more than 73 points in all three games in the competition and winning by an average of 40 points a game.

The third contest of the tournament will tip off at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday between Mayfield and Santa Fe.

The Mayfield Trojans come into the tournament with a 1-3 record on the season. The Trojans lone win came against Roswell in the season opener.

Since then, Mayfield has lost to Americas of El Paso, Sandia and West Mesa, all by 14 or more points.

Santa Fe will come into the tournament at 4-0. The Demons took home the championship in the Capitol City Tournament, with wins over Los Alamos, Taos and Espanola Valley over the weekend.

Santa Fe has won each of their four games this season by at least 20 points.

The Hub City Tournament has games Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the championship contest slated for 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11.
