Socorro’s Lady Warrior got a taste Saturday of what is in store for them in district action when they faced Cobre in the Hot Springs softball tournament.

Socorro held a 9-6 lead in the fourth, only to have perennial state contender Cobre rally to win 10-7 in the bottom of the seventh.

“We showed we can play with everyone in our district,” coach Mike Appel said of his team’s performance.

The Lady Warriors were led by Rebecca Apodaca, three for four, Amanda Manjarrez, three for four including a triple, and Lyndsey Cryer, two for three including a double.

After opening the tournament with a 8-5 loss to Hot Springs High, the Lady Warriors defeated Santa Teresa 13-5.

Against Santa Teresa, Socorro jumped to a 10-1 lead in the second then held Santa Teresa to five runs in the third. The Lady Warriors added three in the fourth to secure the win.

Tanya Cornwell, Danielle Garza and Felise Alvarado led the team in the hitting department.

Coach Appel was proud of his pitching staff. Alvarado worked the mound against Hot Springs and Cobre, while Tracy Appel pitched the victory.
