Just because Valencia County’s governing bodies’ hands are tied by state statute, preventing them from banning the use of fireworks, it does not mean that people should act irresponsibly and discharge fireworks.

Instead, we encourage you to leave the fireworks displays to the professionals this year and check out one of the public fireworks shows in the area.

The City of Belen will be lighting the skies on Saturday night, June 29, during its Hub City Musicfest at the junction of Dalies, Becker and Main streets.

The Village of Los Lunas will be holding its annual Fourth of July celebration, with fireworks capping a day of events, on Thursday, including a parade in the morning and a day-long festival at Daniel Fernandez Park.

In Socorro, New Mexico Tech will also be hosting a day of events at Macey Auditorium.

Kirtland Air Force Base will host Albuquerque’s event on July 4.

And the holiday will be capped at the Journal Pavilion on July 5, when the Albuquerque Symphony performs The Fifth on the Fifth with music and a fireworks display.

Or stay home in the air conditioning and watch the “Pop Goes the Fourth” on the Arts and Entertainment cable channel.

Load up the kids in the car, and head out to one of these displays. Be safe and enjoy!
