It’s prom weekend. There are so many thoughts that come to mind. First and foremost, we hope that everyone has a wonderful time and looks absolutely fantastic. We urge parents to buy lots of film because you probably will never see these kids this dressed up again until their weddings.

We urge the kids to have a great time but to forgo the alcohol that, all too often, becomes a temptation at an event such as this.

Los Lunas High School has a great idea — offering an after-prom event at the movie theater from midnight to 3 a.m. We can’t imagine anything that would be more fun than continuing the party, complete with movies and popcorn.

We urge parents to invite groups to come back to their homes for a breakfast to cap off the night. It’ll take a little extra effort and mean that you have to get up pretty darned early in the morning, but it’s better than seeing everyone go off to drink until dawn.

Belen High School is offering a nice tradition, opening the gym up before the prom begins so that parents can see the decorations. That’s great because it also involves the entire family in the fun. A lot of parents will be remembering their prom nights, and a little nostalgia is probably a good thing.

We’d love to report in Wednesday’s edition that no one was hurt, there were no accidents, that the streets were deserted and that police officers didn’t have to make any calls of any sort to parents at all.
