The host Belen Eagles captured the girls’ team title Saturday at the Jim Burke Invitational, while the Los Lunas Tigers dominated the field to win the boys’ competition.

Three local athletes were multi-event winners, including Lorenzo Ibarra, of LLHS, who won the long jump and 110 hurdles while finishing second in the 100 meters.

For BHS, eighth-grader Sophia Cox was first in the 100 meters and was on two winning relay teams.

Lisette Sanchez was also on two first-place relay teams and was victorious in the 3200 meters.

Reaching state qualifying marks for Belen were Nate Sanchez in the 100 meters; Lisette Sanchez in the 3200 meters; 1600 meter girls’ medley relay team of Sanchez, Sophia Cox, Madi Cox and Shauncey Cordova; girls’ 4×200 meter relay team of Jhatziry Perez, Cordova, Madi Cox and Sophia Cox; and the girls’ 4×800 meter relay squad of Sara Martinez, Sanchez, Alisha Tuttle and Avery Carter.

For Los Lunas, Gabe Castillo reached a state qualifying throw in the javelin.

Boys’ team results

  2. Belen High School, 77 points
  3. Moriarty High School, 74 points

Girls’ team results

  1. Belen High School, 113 points
  2. Moriarty High School, 101 points
  3. Los Lunas High School, 93 points

Valencia in Farmington

Valencia had some excellent performances at a meet in Farmington on Saturday.

Nizhoni Apodaca was first in discus; Jaden Montgomery second in 400 meters and third in high jump; Zipporah Heneghan was second in triple jump; Ali Abdullah first in long jump; Victor Ramirez first in the 800 meters; and Morgan Sanchez was third in javelin, 300 meter hurdles and 100 meters.

Apodaca, Montgomery, Abdullah and Mac Piper in the pole vault have qualified for state.
