Daniel D. Fernandez VFW Post 9676 Commander Chet Pino and Quartermaster/Essay Contest Chairman Jack Lovato presented Los Lunas High School graduate Marissa Weldon a certificate and cash scholarship award for winning the post’s 2019 Voice of Democracy Essay Contest.

Marissa Weldon is not only an excellent writer and driven academic achiever, but she is also an accomplished and recognized athlete. Marissa was accepted to Texas Tech University and will pursue a degree in criminal justice.

Marissa was a member of the Los Lunas School National Honor Society, and four-year letterman in academics, cross country, basketball and softball. These are only of few of Marissa’s accomplishment. Commander Pino congratulated Marissa and thanked for her participation and wished her well in all her future endeavors. Essay contest chairman Lovato invites all high school students to visit the VFW.org website to learn more about how they can win their share of $2.1 million educational scholarships given out each year. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship.
