LOS LUNAS — The opening of the Los Lunas drive-in theater has been delayed indefinitely due to issues with the screen, according to parks and recreation director Jason Duran.

Initially, the department had targeted an opening around Labor Day weekend for the project, which was announced at the end of August.

“At this time, we don’t have an opening date (for the theater),” Duran said.

The theater will be located at the intersection of N.M. 314 and Morris Road, where the former Badlands BMX Park was. The drive-in is being constructed using recycled materials the village already had on hand, allowing for the quick development of the project as well as keeping the costs minimal.

In addition to movies, Duran said previously said they will explore the possibility of using the screen to show New Mexico Activities Association events.

Capacity at the theater is estimated to be around 100 cars, with sound being transmitted through an FM station. Ticketing will be done through the parks and recreation department’s online catalog used to register for classes and camps. A free account will be required.
