LOS LUNAS—Daniel D. Fernandez, Los Lunas Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Post 9676) is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in the education and success of future generations.

Post Commander Chet Pino and Quartermaster and committee chairman Jack Lovato are proud to announce the first and second-place winners, at the post level, of the 2022-23 Voice of Democracy (VOD) Audio Essay Scholarship competition.

The first-place winner of the VOD audio essay completion was Nathan Davis, a Los Lunas High School junior. The second-place winner was Kevin McCleary, a Los Lunas High School senior.

The Voice of Democracy Audio-Essay Competition theme was “Why is a Veteran Important?” Both Davis and McCleary submitted essays describing why a veteran is important.

There are four progressive levels of the VOD completion — Post, District, State and National. By placing first place at the Post, first place at the District levels and second place at the State VOD completion, Davis earned an $850 scholarship. Had he won first place at the state level, Davis would have been awarded an additional minimum of a $1,000 scholarship at the VFW National convention, and been provided an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete for the top National Grand Prize of a $35,000 scholarship.

The local VFW encourages all Valencia County high school students to apply for the 2023-24 Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Scholarships. The deadline for submitting applications is Oct. 31, 2023.
