Los Lunas

A number of students from the Los Lunas Schools took top honors at the New Mexico Science and Engineering Fair at New Mexico Tech in Socorro.

Winners from Bosque Farms included:

  • Spencer J. Moya, Manzano Vista Middle School, second place, junior zoology, “Stress Elimination Part 2.” Awards: pin, certificate, and invitation to enter Discovery’s Young Scientist Challenge, Discovery Junior Scientist Challenge, awarded to junior high students for good science and the ability to communicate about that science.
  • Natalie F. Plutino, Menaul School, honorable mention, junior category of medicine and health science, “Do Chemicals and Excessive Heat Damage Hair?”

Winners from Los Lunas include:

  • Talysa C. Ogas, Los Lunas Middle School, first place, junior microbiology, “Part III: How Effective is Tea Tree Oil as Compared to Pro-activ and Retin-A.” Awards: $150 savings bond, University of New Mexico School of Medicine, pin, certificate, and invitation to enter Discovery’s Young Scientist Challenge, Discovery Junior Scientist Challenge, awarded to junior high students for good science and the ability to communicate about that science.
  • Daniel K. Matthes, Manzano Vista Middle School, $50 cash award, Junior Division, Botany, “Exploring Hybrids,” Pinon Computing Physics Award.
  • Dan Tooker, Los Lunas Middle School, Third Place, Junior Environmental Science, “A Bug’s Life: Using Benthic Macroinvertebrates to Determine Water Quality.” Awards: pin, certificate, invitation to enter Discovery’s Young Scientist Challenge, Discovery Scientist Challenge, awarded to junior high students for good science and the ability to communicate about that science.
  • Roland J. Kern, Los Lunas High School, honorable mention, senior environmental science, “Don’t Waste the Wastewater.” Awards: $250 savings bond and entry into the Stockholm Junior Water Competition, Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association, projects related to water quality, water resource management, water protection, water treatment, or water reuse.

Winners from Peralta include:

  • Kyle Dear, Manzano Vista Middle School, honorable mention, junior chemistry, “How Effective are Fire Retardants.”
  • Adrianna R. Cole, Los Lunas Middle School, junior zoology. “Control of the Varroa Mite: Creosote vs. Check Mite”
