Several Memorial Day events were held in Valencia County on Monday, May 29.

The first was held at Belen’s Veterans Memorial at Eagle Park, above. Chavez-Curran VFW Post 2387 Commander Charles Cox was the master of ceremonies at the annual ceremony in Belen.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Jarales War Memorial was hosted by the Secundino Baldonado American Legion Post 81. The names of all local lost veterans were listed and recited aloud.

A Memorial Day event was held at the Thomé Dominguez Community Center in Tomé, below, where a Korean War memorial is placed. There was a presentation of the history of Memorial Day, a flag presentation, a reading of the significance of each fold of the flag, and playing
of “Taps.”

Julia M. Dendinger began working at the VCNB in 2006. She covers Valencia County government, Belen Consolidated Schools and the village of Bosque Farms. She is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists Rio Grande chapter’s board of directors.

Clara Garcia is the editor and publisher of the Valencia County News-Bulletin.
She is a native of the city of Belen, beginning her journalism career at the News-Bulletin in 1998 as the crime and courts reporter. During her time at the paper, Clara has won numerous awards for her writing, photography and typography and design both from the National Newspaper Association and the New Mexico Press Association.

Felina Martinez was born and raised in Valencia County. She graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2021. During her time at UNM, she studied interdisciplinary film, digital media and journalism. She covers the village of Los Lunas, Los Lunas Schools, the School of Dreams Academy and the town of Peralta.
