The Belen School District wants to commemorate the old Belen General Hospital with a sculpture at the new administration building.

The structure is being built at the old hospital location on Main Street.

Superintendent Don Duran is inviting people who were either born at the hospital, used the services of the facility or who just want to be part of the memorial to participate in the project.

“We would like to capture the history of the old hospital by remembering the people who used the hospital for many years,” Duran said. “The hospital holds many memories for our community that we need to preserve.”

To preserve those memories, the school district is inviting people to donate $25 per brick for a walkway into the new administration building. Each brick will have the name of the person being memorialized etched into it.

“The profits from the sale of the bricks will be used to commission a local artist to design a sculpture that will capture the community’s memories of this very important building in the community’s history,” he said.

To participate in the project, community members are asked to send their donation, including up to a 26-letter inscription, to Belen consolidated Schools, 520 Main Street, Belen, 87002. Indicate on the envelope: “Attention: Belen Hospital Walk of History.”
