They don’t get too many pats on the back, even though we couldn’t really function very well as a society without them. We take them for granted, even yell, because something we expected to arrive hasn’t made it to our door.

We’re referring, of course, to this nation’s postal workers. They get no respect, from jokes about “going postal” to comments that it takes months for a letter to get from here to Albuquerque.

But, as the district manager of the local service points out in his column on Page 5A, the U.S. Postal Service moves in two days more than FedEx absolutely postively does in a year and in a week as much as UPS does in a year.

Now that’s really something. It’s mind boggling to think about all the magazines, cards from grandma, bills, love letters, boxes of baby chicks and so much more that get to the right place in a very reasonable amount of time — day after day after day.

We say thank you to every man and woman who works in the post office — especially in Valencia County. You deliver service with a smile. You are efficient and effective. You come to us every single day, without fail. You travel through the countryside, bringing city services to people on rural routes.

We salute you and your hard work. We appreciate you delivering pounds of cards and fruit cake at Christmas, stacks of Valentines in February and the News-Bulletin all year around. You guys are the best!
