Los Lunas

A new Los Lunas cell phone business opened in August under the slogan “Guaranteed Lowest Prices.”

Owner Walt Leathers of Albuquerque has some friends, who are long-time Los Lunas residents. After talking to them and doing a demographic study, the former South Valley resident decided to open X-Connect Communications, located just west of the Valencia Y on Main Street, next to NovaCare.

“Los Lunas is a growing community,” Leathers said. “The residents are loyal, and they prefer a local provider.”

What can people expect from X-Communications?

“Not only do we offer a lower price, we also offer a 100 percent satisfaction guaranteed,” Leathers said. “We will do whatever it takes to make a consumer happy.”

At just 29, Leathers appears to be on the fast track to business success. His first X-Connect store opened off Coors Boulevard last November, and a third store will open in Albuquerque on Nov. 1 at the corner of Juan Tabo and Menaul.

Formerly a corporate trainer for a telephone company, Leathers decided to go into business for himself after he experienced a downsizing move. Before that, Leathers served in the U.S. Army as the pharmacist at the White Sands Missile Range.

Managing the X-Connect Communications store in Los Lunas is Sally Yocum, who recently moved to the Meadow Lake area from Albuquerque. Yocum brings 20 years of management experience in the fast-food business to her current position. She formerly managed the food and beverage department of the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind.

Leathers entrusted Yocum to handle many duties in opening the new Los Lunas store. Yocum handled everything from ordering furniture to getting the phone lines and electricity hooked up.

T-Mobile, formerly Voice Stream, is the main phone service offered at X-Connect, in addition to AT&T and Cricket. X-Connect cell phones range from $119.99 to $350. Activation rates go from $49.99 to $99.99. After a credit check and activation, the customer gets a free phone.

“We do run specials,” Yocum said. “Right now, we’re running a family plan for $69.99. You buy one phone and get one free with that plan.”

Cell phone accessories run anywhere from $9.99 to $13.99, Yocum said.
