Enforcement checkpoints

In conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and Safer New Mexico Now, the Los Lunas Police Department will be conducting saturation patrols, enforcement checkpoints and seat belt enforcement operations during the month of October.

New Mexico State Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and registration, insurance and driver’s license checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during the month of October.

 

Revivals  scheduled

The Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene, 104 La Luna in Rio Communities, will hold revivals at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1-2, and at 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 3.

 

Fiestas de Peralta y Valencia

The fourth annual Fiestas de Peralta y Valencia will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 2. The Fiesta will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. starting at Peralta Town Hall. There will be a car show, live entertainment, bingo, raffles, jumpers, face painting and fireworks at 9 p.m.

 

Outdoor Day at Whitfield

Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area is celebrating Getting Kids Outdoors Learning Week on Saturday, Oct. 2.

Schedule of activities include from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Whitfield Junior and Adult Ranger Programs; from 11 a.m. to noon, Rocket Punch Farm: All About Bugs Presentation; from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Herpetologist, Jerry Tuttle: Live Birds and Reptiles Inside; from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sublime Pastures: Stories from a pig: come nose to nose with one; from noon to 1 p.m., Master Naturalist Hike around Whitfield; come prepared with water, layers, sunscreen and bug repellent. Meet outside of Visitor Center, 2424 N.M. 47, south of Rio Communities.

 

Drone Scramble

The Meadow Lake Parks Area Association will hold a Drone Scramble from 9-11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 3, at the MLPAA property at the end of Meadow Lake road. Bring and fly your drone. This Drone Scramble will consist of a mapped, timed course to find hidden targets, each containing parts of a phrase.

Lowest time wins prize. No drone, no problem. Come and watch the event. All are invited to attend. For information, call Jim Lane at 865-9786.

 

Belen municipal candidate forum

A candidate forum for Belen municipal offices, sponsored by the Greater Belen Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Belen Public Library. There is limited capacity for the event, but it will live-streamed on the News-Bulletin and chamber Facebook pages.

 

Networking  luncheon

The Greater Belen Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Belen Public Library, 333 Becker Ave. The cost is $12 per person. To reserve your spot, call 463-5558 or email [email protected].

 

Pancake  breakfast

The Valencia County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, at Calvary Chapel Rio Grande Valley in Belen. Sheriff Denise Vigil will be talking about policing issues. The event is free, and any donations will go to the Valencia County Sheriff’s Reserve Program. For information, call 866-2400.

 

Annual food drive

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is taking donations of non-perishable food for its annual distributions of food baskets for needy family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Take donations to the office at 719 S. Main St., Belen. For information, call Bertha Flores at 966-2567, or Cindy Lu Hurbina at 966-2566.

 

Bosque Farms Cleanup

The Bosque Farms Fall Cleanup will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9-10 and Oct. 16-17.

The dumpsters will be located at the maintenance yard next to the wastewater treatment plant on DeSmet Road. Residents will be allowed one load per household.

Residents must bring a water bill or utility bill for proof of residency. For information, call the village office at 869-2358.

 

Thanksgiving basket applications

Beginning Oct. 6 through Nov. 19, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program will be taking applications to help those in need with a Thanksgiving food basket. This is limited to the number of baskets available.

Those who qualify must live in the Belen school district. When applying, you must show proof of income, residence, ID and birth certificate or Medicaid card for each child in the household.

Applications are available at the RSVP office, 719 S. Main St., Belen. For information, call Bertha Flores at 966-2567, or Cindy Lu Hurbina at 966-2566.

 

Food for seniors

The ECHO CSFP Program is offering free food for senior citizens who are 60 years old and older from 8 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Belen Community Center, 305 Eagle Lane.

To register, bring a picture ID and/or proof of age. For information, call the RSVP office and ask for Bertha at 966-2567 or Cindy Lu at 966-2566.
