Salomon “Salo” Nicodemus Archuleta

1928-2021

Salomon “Salo” Nicodemus Archuleta, age 92, a resident of Belen, passed away on Jan. 20, 2021.

He was a member of San Clemente Catholic Church in Los Lunas. Salo was a master sergeant in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in El Paso, Texas. He retired as an educator after 35 years of service for APS.

Salo was loved by his many students at Albuquerque High School. He enjoyed his retirement, traveling all over the country, and his life on the farm in Belen.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary P. Archuleta; daughter, Linda M. Hammack; brothers, Figo, Teles and Antonio Jr.; and sisters, Rose and Nina.

Salo is survived by his brother, Augustin (Pauline); sons, Rudy (Evelyn), David (Sandra) and Michael; grandchildren, Michael Jr. (Kristin), Susan (Edric), Rudy Jr., Ariana, (Gibbs), Jennifer (Zachary), Amanda (Jake), Carmel, Natasha and William (Miranda); 16 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Services will take place on Thursday, Feb. 4, at San Clemente Catholic Church beginning with a Rosary to be recited at 10:30 a.m., and a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at 2:15 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Helen Delores Swope Floyd

1944-2021

Helen Delores Swope Floyd, age 76, a resident of Belen, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 23, 2021.

Helen was born to Emry Swope and Opal Green Swope on June 6, 1944, in Albuquerque. She graduated from Mountainair High School in 1962. She married Newton Floyd on June 30, 1962. They made their home in Belen since that time. Two sons were born to them, Randall in 1964, and Tim in 1972.

Helen faithfully served her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and served her church for many years as Sunday school secretary, and assisted in many other ways, while being a caring and loving wife, mother, daughter and sister.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emry and Opal Swope; and her loving grandparents.

She is survived by her husband, Newton Floyd, of the family home; brother, Clifton Swope, of Albuquerque; son, Rev. Randall Floyd and wife, Cindy, RN of Clayton, N.M., and their sons, Michael and Christopher, of Las Cruces; and Richard Barksdale and wife, Bobbie, of Abilene, Texas; son, Rev. Tim Floyd and wife Rev. Lori and their children, Audrey and Benjamin, of Evanston, Wyo.

A family graveside service will be held at the Mountainair Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends.

Arthur Sally Gonzales Sr.

1955-2021

Arthur Sally Gonzales Sr., age 65, a resident of Belen, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021.

He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend to many.

Arthur loved being under a hood working on cars. He enjoyed tending to his garden, going shooting and going to the drag races. Arthur also liked to watch UFC fights with his family and loved being a grandpa.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary; father, Antonio; baby sister, Josie; brothers, David, Phillip, Willie and Anthony; brothers-in-law, Pete Sisneros and Pete Jr. and Stephanie.

Arthur is survived by his children, Arthur Jr., Julian, Desirae, Charlie and Jessie; sisters, Maxine Sisneros (Jesus), Josephine Gutierrez (Johnny) and Victoria Davis (Jim); mother of his children, Barbara Chavez; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Manuel “Manny” Gutierrez

1939-2021

Manuel “Manny” Gutierrez, age 81, left this world peacefully on Jan. 22, 2021.

In home hospice care since March, he enjoyed his Sunday bowl of menudo, listening to New Mexico Spanish music, and his daily bubble gum.

Manny was born in 1939 in Sheridon, Wyo., and he grew up in Manzano, N.M.

As a student, he had a natural talent for baseball and basketball, which continued to be a passion throughout his life. He met his true love, Nellie Gutierrez, on the baseball field. He described her as mesmerizing because of her ability to dominate the game. They were married in 1960 and have six children.

Manny was a professional baker by trade and traveled the country, opening stores for Skaggs Alpha Beta. His passion for baking led him to open his own business in September 1996 in Los Lunas.

A die-hard Raider fan who enjoyed banter with everyone he crossed paths with, Manny dedicated his spare time to prison ministries and singing and playing guitar in the church choir.

Manny was preceded in death by his parents, Epifanio and Celia (Lopez) Gutierrez; his wife and his oldest grandsons, Floyd B. Gutierrez and Marcos Gutierrez.

He is survived by six children, daughter, Bernadette Gutierrez; son, David Gutierrez (Rosanne); daughter, Yvonne Perea (Steve); daughter, Betty Jean Villa (Jose); son, Ron Gutierrez, and son, Floyd Gutierrez (Tanya). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will take place on Friday, Jan. 29, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomé, beginning with a public viewing at 10 a.m., a Rosary to be recited at 10:30 a.m., a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. and interment to follow at Tomé Catholic Cemetery.

Joe O. Lucero

1934-2021

Joe O. Lucero, age 86, passed away on, Monday, Jan. 18, 2021.

He was born April 21, 1934, in Bernalillo, to parents Benjamin and Anita Lucero. In 1953, he moved to California, and in 1954, Joe married Merlin Baca Lucero and raised his family in California.

Joe worked for General Motors for 33 years and retired in 1984 and moved back to New Mexico. He loved his family and would make any excuse to have a barbecue just to have his family over. Joe was a great great-grandfather in so many ways.

He was preceded in death by his son, Benny Lucero; and grandson, Levi Bruce.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Merlin Lucero; children, Victoria Jaramillo and husband, Robert, and Debbie Strand and husband, Richard; Michael Lucero, and Priscilla Otero; grandchildren, Joe (JD) Lucero, Wilbert Bruce, Terri Jaramillo, Richard Strand, Matthew Strand, Antoinette Lucero, Erica Lucero, Salina Lawrence, Frank Lucero, Ben Lucero, Steven Garrett and Nichole Gomez.

Services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on Friday, Jan. 29. A visitation will begin at 9 a.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 9:30 a.m., and a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery in Bernalillo.

John Calvin West

1937-2021

John Calvin West, who passed away on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021, is survived by his adoring wife of 45 years, Lena Clydene West, of Belen; beloved daughters, Lori Hampton, of Amherst, Texas, Kathy Davis, of St. James, Minn., Sherri Coombs, of Albuquerque, and Julia Free, of Garth, Texas; son, John West, of Atoka, Okla; brother, Ronald West of Missouri; sisters, Lavelle, Jean and June, of Missouri; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by parents, Bert and Bertha West; four brothers and one sister; son, Stephen Hamilton West; and grandson, JC West.

John was born west of Crawford County, Missouri, where he was raised. As a young man, he enlisted in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

After leaving the service, John followed his heart and became a cowboy, working on several ranches and feedlots, including at John Wayne’s.

John cherished God, his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Honor Flight Network and the FFA.

Funeral services will be held when it is safe to gather.
