Richard F. Perea has announced that he will seek the Republican Party’s nomination for Valencia County sheriff. Perea, who has 17 years of law enforcement and corrections experience, has been a deputy sheriff in Valencia County for the past 11 years.

Perea is a lifelong resident of Valencia County and was born and raised in Peralta to Eliseo and Rosaleen Perea. He now lives in El Cerro with his wife and two children.

“My dedication to this county as a resident and a law enforcement officer has helped me understand the need for a stronger community-based law enforcement program,” Perea said.

After four years in the U.S. Navy as a member of the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force in Beirut, Lebanon, Perea returned to Valencia County and pursued his career in law enforcement.

“One of my goals will be in hiring officers from this community who have the same commitment towards the residents and the development of the department,” Perea said. “I believe this will make a more stable department which will attract and retain qualified personnel that will address the problems that the community has identified.”

Perea said he is the best candidate for sheriff because he cares about the people living in the county. “I plan to live in Valencia County for the rest of my life, and I want a safe county for all of our children to be raised in,” he said. “I look forward to meeting as many of the residents as possible and to serving all of you in Valencia County as your next sheriff.”
