Ana Valencia Pope of Rio Communities has announced that she will be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Valencia County Probate Judge in the 2002 primary election.

Pope, 21, says she became interested in becoming probate judge when she worked for Valencia County Magistrate Judge Danny Hawkes and for her father, District Court Judge John W. Pope, in Los Lunas.

She is also the daughter of Linda Marsh Pope, an instructor at Albuquerque Technical-Vocational Institute. Both Linda Pope and Judge Pope are instructors at the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus.

Currently, Ana Pope is a manager at the Century Rio Theater in Albuquerque. She is also studying for her emergency medical technician certificate at T-VI after receiving her childcare certificate through that institution.

Pope enlisted in the United States Navy when she was 19, but a bad knee resulted in a medical discharge.

She has volunteered with Tierra Bonita of Valencia County, working especially on Tomé Hill, and with Habitat for Humanity. In addition, she has spent time with the Albuquerque Zoo and Theater in the Making. Pope points out that she enjoys being a registered Scottish Athlete.

“I want to serve as a positive role model to encourage other young people to participate in the political process and governance,” said Pope of her run for probate judge.
