Sallie Chapa Madrid

Sallie Chapa Madrid, 85, of Albuquerque, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

She was born in Taylor, Texas, on Aug. 23, 1937, to Selia and Manuel Chapa Jr. She married Eustacio “Eddie” Madrid on Dec. 14, 1954, and they celebrated 68 years together until his passing on Jan. 17, 2023.

The second of seven children, no family gathering was ever complete without the passionate, emotional and wise words of Sallie. She would never hesitate to express the love she had for her family and the faith she put in her Lord. Her compelling speeches would command the attention of everyone present, and whether family or a guest, each individual left feeling blessed by her words. It was evident this beautiful woman was the cornerstone of this family, and she was beloved for her lessons in faith, love, unity and respect.

To countless others, Sallie and Eddie opened their hearts and home to anyone and everyone they could bless. Sallie provided a home to those who needed a place to lay their head, a meal to those who were hungry, and love and acceptance to those who needed it most.

She was also a loving and devoted mother to Connie, Vickie, Mary Grace, Manuel, Maria, Edward, Elizabeth and Anna and their spouses.

Sallie nurtured her 23 grandchildren, Gabrielle, Jason, Adam, Danielle (Connie and Jay), Nicole, Joselyn, Alissa (Vickie and Eugene), Nathaniel, Mary Lee (Mary Grace and Lawrence), Krystian, Andre, Hayley (Manuel and Dora), Ian, Leah (Maria and Thomas), Alexandria, Emilia (Edward and Melissa), Adriana, Mya (Elizabeth and Corey), Joaquin, Liliana, Lorena, Marisa and Mateo (Anna and Juan); 16 great-grandchildren, Nico, Año, Emma, Lisa, Avory, Collin, Ava, Justus, Michael, Bash, Sarah, Aspen, Jack, Lyla, Alaric and Allister; and great-great grandson, Jesse.

Sallie is survived by two sisters, Gloria Chapa, of Los Lunas, and Lily Avalos, of Del Rio, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie; daughter, Vickie; her siblings, Domingo, Tim, Tony and Dora; and her parents.

She was a member of San Clemente Parish in Los Lunas, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 1.

Her legacy will live on in the generations to come as her family honors her love for the Lord, her strength and her passion for living.
