Samuel Thomas Potis

Samuel Thomas Potis passed away May 26, 2022, at his home in Los Lunas.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Lena Potis.

He is survived by his three children, son, Christopher Potis and wife, Gina, daughters, Nanette Potis and Rebecca Burkhard and her husband, Louis; and grandsons, Patrick and wife, Alexia, and their son, Logan (great-grandson) and Benjamin and his wife, Ashley, and Sam’s very good friend, Jacquelyn Costello, who lived with Sam this past year and gave so much support and love. On behalf of Sam and the family, we are very grateful to her.

Sam was born in Norwich, N.Y., and raised in Oneonta, N.Y. He joined the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school and was supposed to go to Korea to be in the Korean War but his grandfather died, so the Air Force sent him home for the funeral, then kept him stateside. He was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska for his service time.

After his discharge in 1953, he went back home to Oneonta, where he met his wife, Marilyn Black. They married and had three children. Sam decided to move to New Mexico and packed up everything and moved west.

Sam was always self-employed. He had his own trucking company for several years, then he owned a tile and carpet store, selling carpet and tile and doing installations. Sam was also a carpenter he built cabinets and furniture that he still has in his house.

He then moved on to buying and selling cars and worked at a paint and body shop while at the same time had a couple of toy train stores, where he bought, sold and traded toy trains. This was his hobby and he had a huge collection of toy trains which he recently sold.

Sam was always looking for a good deal; he loved garage sales and flea markets and just sales in general. Sam had a love for animals; he would bring home any animal that needed help. He also left behind his cute little dog, Susie, who he rescued from the shelter and adored, and will be well cared for by Sam’s family.

Sam will be missed but we know that he is now free from his aliments and his soul has gone back to his creator. Sam is now rejoicing and dancing with all his family and friends that went before him.
