St. Mary’s School is celebrating its 75th anniversary on Sept. 7 with a dinner and dance. The next day, there’ll be a Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birthday, along with a sacred celebration of the school’s achievement.

Any educational facility that can stay open that long deserves the respect of each and every one of us.

Seventy-five years ago, it was 1927, a little more than a decade since statehood. During some periods, St. Mary’s was an integral part of the public educational system of the community, administered by the superintendent. In more recent years, it’s gone through financial crises and other changes.

But St. Mary’s has weathered every challenge, made it through three-quarters of a century, always providing the sort of caring and loving education it has become famous for.

We urge local leaders to honor the school in some significant way. We hope a huge crowd turns out for the fund-raising dinner, which will feature musician Al Hurricane. Admission is $25 for couples and $15 for singles. Drop by at the school to pick up a ticket or call 864-0484, 865-6515 or 873-2394.

Photos are being gathered by the group. If you have something you’d like to share, call Corrine at 864-7012.

And be sure to attend the open house at the school following the noon Mass on Sunday, Sept. 8. It’s part of the history of each one of us living here in Valencia County.
