The laughs fill the room after some light trash-talking from competitors at the Belen Senior Center.

The competitors are members of the Valencia County Senior Olympics, and they are playing some rounds of cornhole, something the members do three times a week in the county.

“We want people to know that we’re out here,” says Helen Abeyta, a coordinator for the VCSO. “We play cornhole in Belen every Tuesday and Thursday, and we’re at Daniel Fernandez Park in Los Lunas every Wednesday. We’d love for people over 50 to join us and get in some exercise.”

The Valencia County Senior Olympics will be holding events through the end of May. Events include golf, bocce ball, track and field events and table tennis among others, including cornhole.

“The pandemic was hard on us,” Abeyta said. “But we’re back out here now, and I want to make it my work now to get people out here and to be active.”

To join the Valencia County Senior Olympics, call 505-639-6805, or stop by the Daniel Fernandez Recreation Center in Los Lunas.
