The 2019 baseball season has kicked off in Valencia County. Local squads have already taken the field against some formidable opponents and gotten a taste for how this season will flow.

Here’s how Valencia, Belen and Los Lunas performed in their first week of play.

Valencia Jaguars

Valencia (4-0) began their season strong with the Valencia Invite.

The Invite began with a 14-4 Jags win over Pojoaque Valley. Next, the Jags beat Hope Christian 10-6. Finally, in the championship round, Valencia shut out Grants 8-0.

“We like that we are off to a good start, but we will continue to focus on improving,” said Valencia head coach Carlos Carrasco. “We want to be playing our best baseball in April through May.”

The Jaguars beat Moriarty 16-6 on Tuesday evening. Their next game will be at the Carlsbad Tournament, where they will face Artesia at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Belen Eagles

Belen (2-2) kicked their season off with a double-header against Alamogordo.

The Eagles lost the first game 15-3, but rebounded and beat Alamogordo 10-1 in the second matchup.

Belen hit the road on Saturday to beat West Mesa 10-7. On Tuesday evening, they fell to Albuquerque Academy 10-0.

“We’re still early in the season,” said Belen head coach Tom Wisneski. “We’re still very young and inexperienced, and we have to find out who we are.”

Belen’s next game will be at the Cleveland Invite in Rio Rancho when they take on Pueblo West at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Los Lunas Tigers

Los Lunas (1-0) began their season with a 4-1 win over Sandia Prep.

Their next game will be at Farmington at 2 p.m. Thursday.
