It’s time to stop in our tracks and start all over again. We’re talking about Bosque Farms and the controversy stirred up when the village council decided not to vote on whether its top administrators and various board members should be retained.

We sincerely hope it was all a misunderstanding, that the three councilors who voted against bringing the subject up simply wanted a little more time to gather their thoughts.

The top three employees — village administrator, treasurer and police chief — all seem to be doing good jobs, and the councilors have indicated that they didn’t mean to throw any negative light on them or to indicate that they weren’t doing a good job.

Perhaps everyone can take a step back, draw in a deep breath and decide to reconsider. Maybe we can forgive one another, shake hands and agree that the fighting simply isn’t good for the community.

We hope the newly-reconfigured council can see to rehire the staff and re-appoint the planning and zoning commission, library boards and other appointed bodies. Not doing so might disrupt the smooth operation of the village.

On the other hand, everybody else should give the new councilors a break. It’s a bit overwhelming to step into such a detail-intensive role. It doesn’t seem as though they meant to cause a disruption in the village government or to make anyone uncomfortable.

Let’s give one another the benefit of the doubt. The stakes are too high not to.
