Propp said during a pre-ISO evaluation earlier this year, it became clear the county was in jeopardy of losing funding for some of its stations.
“This is what we were told by ISO and the state fire marshal. Each district had a station in jeopardy of losing funding,” Propp said.

“The fire department has a statutory requirement for fire protection,” said Valencia County Fire Chief Matt Propp. “We do EMS because it’s the right thing to do for the community, but it’s our legal obligation to have units for fire protection.
“When we’re transporting to a hospital in Albuquerque, those are our firefighters and that puts fire protection at risk.”
“Our crews are working out of one station, taking 30 to 35 calls in a 48-hour shift,” he said. “If you look at call times and if they have to transport, we have crews not sleeping for two days. It’s taking a toll on their mental health.”
