A Belen teenager was killed when he was thrown from the four-wheeler he was driving Tuesday afternoon.

Robert Daniel Kean, 19, was riding a 2001 Yamaha four-wheeler with his friend, Everett Dimas Jr., 14, of Los Lunas, at the intersection of Miller and Linda Vista Road at 4:20 p.m. when the accident occurred.

State Police Lt. Robert Shilling said the two were traveling north on Miller Road when the four-wheeler they were riding drifted off the west side of the roadway.

“The four-wheeler struck the northeast corner of a shed and a fence post,” Shilling said. “The driver and the passenger were both thrown off the vehicle as it rolled a number of times.”

Shilling said Kean struck his head on an unknown object and was pronounced dead on the scene. Everett was found with serious head injuries and is currently listed in satisfactory condition at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.

Shilling said officers were still unsure of the exact cause of the accident and said the case is still under investigation.

Attempts to reach the families of the two young men were unsuccessful.
