Belen senior all-purpose player David Hull took home District 3-4A Most Valuable Player award to lead the Belen contingent of basketball players earning all-district honors.

Sophomore point guard John Henry Peralta joined Hull on the district’s first team. Additionally, seniors Robert Rimorin, Onecimo Mirabal and Carlos Flores each received honorable mention in voting conducted by district coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.

For the Lady Eagles, sophomore guard Jocelyn Chavez was Belen’s lone representative on the district’s first team. Receiving honorable mention were senior forward Katherine Archuleta, sophomore guards Melissa Gurule and Crystal Cordova, and sophomore post Stephanie Sanchez.

For Hull, his selection as league MVP was a crowning achievement after he came back from two broken wrists suffered early in the pre-district season. Hull returned to the Eagles in time for their first district matchup. He averaged 19.2 points and eight rebounds per game.

“After David came back, every team we played already had an idea of how tough a player he was, and they shadowed him in every game,” Belen head coach David Medina said.

Hull was also selected to the annual Metro East-West All-Star game to be played in Albuquerque on April 6. He will also play in the North-South All-Star game in July, along with teammate Carlos Flores.

Medina said Hull is currently being recruited by a number of junior colleges, Division II colleges Eastern New Mexico, Western New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands, Adams State and Southern Colorado, and Division I school Baylor.

Peralta had a breakout season, averaging seven points and four assists per game.

“All of the coaches spoke very highly of him at the meeting,” Medina said. “Most of the coaches talked about how well he handled the ball for us and how well he ran the offense.”

Medina also had praise for Flores, Mirabal and Rimorin. “Those three guys that got honorable mention were really the stability of our team this year,” he said.

For the Lady Eagles, Chavez averaged 15 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She was also a solid defender, amassing 90 steals for the Lady Eagles.

“We had a very young team this year, and Jocelyn is only a sophomore,” Lady Eagle head coach Dennis White said. “Jocelyn helped us out quite a bit this season in a very balanced district.”

Amy Bonjine of Deming and Delia Delatore of Las Cruces Oñate shared district MVP honors between them.
