Los Lunas —

Third-grade classes at Ann Parish Elementary were fortunate to have a special guest when an anonymous World War II veteran stopped by the school to distribute 100 $1 bills.

He selected these classes to distribute the dollars, so students could give to a worthy cause. In light of the Sept. 11 tragedy, the veteran contributed his money to help the students participate in “Aid for the Afghanistan” children.

President George W. Bush had recently delivered his message of hope after Sept. 11, suggesting that children in the U.S. contribute $1 toward these less-fortunate children to assist with food, clothing and medical attention.

Principal Angela Griego asked Betty Hubbell’s third-grade class to report to the office to visit the special guest who spoke to the children about patriotism.

The third-grade classes wrote to President Bush and also sent their $1 bills to him. They had an opportunity to practice their letter-writing skills.
