Valencia High School celebrates its Capital City Tournament title.

The holiday tournament season has started with several area high school basketball teams enjoying success.

The Los Lunas boys survived several close games to stay unbeaten and win the Artesia tournament. Jalin Holland, Era Guest and Geleio Griego were All-Tournament selections.

The 6-1 Valencia girls also brought home a championship at the Capital City Tournament in Santa Fe.

Azalia Malizia was named Capital City MVP

The Jaguars defeated Rio Rancho and Valley before downing Cleveland in overtime for the title.

Azalia Malizia was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Jaiden Montogomery and Jadyn Montoya joined her on the All-Tournament team.

Consolation honors went to the Belen Eagles at the Hatch tournament.

A consolation bracket championship at the Hatch Red or Green Tournament was captured by the Belen girls.

Maesyn Lopez was selected to the All-Tournament team, and Jaelynn Bob was named Top Offensive Player.

The Lady Eagles improve to 3-1 after winning just one game last season.

In other tournament action, the BHS boys went winless in the Sun Devil Invitational at Sandia Prep, while the Valencia boys were 1-2 at the Capital City Tournament. The LLHS girls fell on the road at Eldorado and Sandia last week.

On Tuesday, both the Los Lunas and Valencia boys lost at home.  The Tigers dropped from the unbeaten ranks after a 62-59 overtime loss to Atrisco Heritage, while VHS lost in double-overtime to Las Vegas Robertson, 82-77.  The LLHS girls are still looking for their first victory after a 58-29 setback at Atrisco Heritage.
