Coach Steve Chavez was pleased after Los Lunas reached the gold bracket of the Tom Torres Tiger Duals wrestling meet Saturday at Los Lunas High School.

“We did great,” Chavez said, especially considering the Tigers were missing several wrestlers coming back from football or out injured. “I’m happy with the result, against some great teams. It was a good kickoff.”

The Tigers defeated Albuquerque Academy and Del Norte to reach the gold bracket. Los Lunas lost 36-33 to La Cueva and fell to eventual champion Cleveland, 47-29.

Logan Talley, Migel Andrade, Noah Gurule and Aaron Zamora were undefeated for the Tigers. Zamora pinned his Cleveland opponent at 133 pounds.

“I set him up for the cradle,” Zamora said of a favorite move. “It’s what I do best. We’re strong bottom to top. We’re gifted —definite contenders.”

Valencia also took part, competing in the bronze bracket against Academy, Los Lunas JV and St. Pius. While VHS didn’t win a dual, Los Lunas coach Chavez noticed significant improvement for the Jaguars this year.

There was not a girls’ team competition but Kia Padilla and Mia Carbajal-Hartog went 3-1 individually for LLHS.

In Santa Fe, the Belen Eagles placed third behind Miyamura and Moriarty at the Jaguar Invitational. Augustine Lopez captured the 215 pound title, while Damien Wood took second at 160 pounds to lead the Eagles.

Belen and Valencia will be at the Patriot Duals at Miyamura Friday, While Los Lunas takes part in the St. Michael’s tournament.
