For parents of active kids, the role of “taxi service” may seem to be just one of the usual duties.
However, it doesn’t have to be that way, thanks to a local child-transport service.
Kids-Go-Round transport service, based in Albuquerque, was founded by Belen resident Margo Lord two years ago. She researched the need for such a business through surveys and conversations with other parents, and thus the service was an automatic success.
Now, after its popularity in the city, the business is planning to expand to the Belen area.
Kids-Go-Round serves children ages 6-15, providing rides for kids who participate in structured activities, such as sports and music lessons.
“It serves the needs of parents and children,” Lord said.
Lord received a certificate in early childhood development from Chaffey College. Ever since, she has devoted her life to working for and with children.
The idea of a kids’ transport service sprouted from Lord’s own experience as a mother of four and years of providing after-school care and running a preschool.
“I love what I do, I love working with children,” she said.
Her favorite part of working with kids is that “they make such interesting conversation … once they warm up to you,” she said.
Lord said she makes sure kids are always in the care of an adult.
“Kids are precious cargo,” Lord said, “and I make sure they’re taken care of.”
In order to make sure kids are kept track of, Lord uses “boarding passes,” which an adult signs when a child arrives at or departs from a location. If there is no adult present, Lord does not leave a child. She said she does her best to keep everyone safe.
The service is relatively inexpensive, Lord said. When gas, mileage, time and labor are added up, the total is much more than the service costs.
“I don’t do it for the money,” she said, “I just want to help kids.”
