Besides an evening of art and music on the UNM-Valencia Campus, the 19th Annual Valley Visions Cultural Festival will feature a look at Jupiter and its moons.

The annual festival, set for Friday, April 19, in the Student-Community Center, will include an early celebration of Astronomy Day, which is April 20 this year.

A large telescope will be on hand, and, weather permitting, there will be daytime viewing of sunspots, solar flares and prominences from 10 a.m. until dusk. In the evening, there will be viewing of Jupiter and its moons until 8:30 p.m. or 9:00 p.m.

Beginning at noon will be dance and drama performances by children participating in the Spring Gifted-High Potential Program and the McCune Charitable Foundation’s Accelerated Enrichment Program. The performances feature elementary students from Belen, Isleta and Los Lunas schools.

A writing expo by children from Tomé Elementary will be on display in the cafeteria. The evening portion of the program, which starts at 6:30 p.m., features:

  • Readings by the Valley Visions Literary Magazine writing award recipients in poetry, essays and short story. The first place recipients in each category will read their winning selections.
  • A performance by the UNM-Valencia Campus Chorus, “Cultures of the Western Hemisphere,” directed by Daniel Davis.
  • A performance by the Roots of the Living Tree of Peace Drum Circle.
  • A tribute to John Denver by Mary Robinson.

The faculty and staff art exhibit will also be featured. This year, the show will be located in the Student Community Center.

Refreshments are provided, following the evening festivities. This event is open and free to the public. The south parking lot on the campus provides convenient access to the Student-Community Center.
