Tuesday, the citizens of Belen, Bosque Farms and Los Lunas have an opportunity to participate in what makes this country great — free elections.

The democratic process is at its finest at the municipal government level. This is the place that the voter’s opinion is felt the strongest. At each level above it, the grassroots opinions are diluted by other influences that play on the politicians.

But for a democratic system to work, the voters must be informed. The News-Bulletin provided a voter guide in the Feb. 23 edition. In it we gave the candidates the opportunity to express their opinions. Hopefully, this guide will give the voter insight into each of the races.

Also, for the democratic system to stay healthy, voters must express their opinion with the cast of their vote.

A lot of people within the boundaries of the United States and in other countries have fought hard battles to earn this right. For Americans not to take time to vote is a shame.

There is an old saying: “If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.” If a person does not take time to vote, yet voices their opinion verbally, they have only experienced one of the privileges which makes the United States great … freedom of speech.

It is better to experience the whole democratic way of life, by expressing your opinion with the cast of a vote.
