Jeff Whyman of Los Lunas won the main event of the Hobby Stock division last Friday night at Duke City Raceway to close the gap on the season’s point leaders.

Unofficially, Whyman jumped from fifth place to third place in the standings, following his win. He still trails fellow Valencia County drivers Ronnie Bell and Ron Leathem Jr., both also from Los Lunas.

Leathem finished second to Whyman while Bell was third. But Whyman’s win should move him past two other area drivers, Phil York and Randall Trujillo, in the point standings.

York, who was in second place overall headed into the weekend, finished a disappointing 17th in the main event. Trujillo was eighth.

Other county drivers in the Hobby Stock main event were Ronnie Leathem Sr., Charla Robinson and James Mickle. Leathem Sr. finished11th, one spot ahead of Robinson. Mickle placed 15th.

In other action at DCR over the weekend, David Cherowyth won the Modified main event on Saturday, finishing just ahead of division point-leader Richard Johnson of Los Lunas.

Other area drivers in the race were Mark McClarren, who placed 14th, and Don Clinger, who finished 22nd.

The featured event at DCR last weekend was Arizona Sprint Cars. Ricky Hood had a good weekend, finishing first on Friday and second on Saturday.

This Saturday’s racing features more Sprint Car and Hobby Stock racing along with the Late Models and Street Stocks. The green flag drops at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
