Vrrroooommm! The Cruizin’ South Route 66 Summerfest will arrive at Heritage Park in Los Lunas this Friday, and anyone who doesn’t go is really missing the boat — er, hot rod.

This could prove to be one of the best events ever in Valencia County. Starting out, there’ll be an appearance by the Fireballs, probably the most famous group ever produced by New Mexico — Buddy Holly did start here, but he really came from Texas. For $10, you can catch a bit of pre-Beatles rock history. (See ¡Caliente! for the full story — and take advantage of this great evening out.)

On Saturday, you’ll have a chance to see any sort of classic car you can imagine, from Model Ts to T-birds, with Studebakers, late ’50s Chevys and just about any other piece of history on wheels you can imagine.

Take it from one who knows nothing about cars — there’s something for everyone. Even if you don’t know a carburetor from an crank shaft, you’ll admire these lovingly-cared-for automobiles for their sheer beauty. View them as sculpture, if you will.

There’ll be great classic American food — bring on the barbecue and the hot dogs, please — and entertainment all through the day.

Give yourself plenty of time — this is one great show. You’ll want to stroll around the grounds, talk to the car owners and fantasize about the car you drove in high school — or the one you dreamed you’d someday own.
