He replaces Frank Otero as president.

Also elected unanimously were Sonya C’Moya as vice president and Brandon Campanella as secretary.

After assuming the presidency, Smith appointed Campanella as chairman and Milo Moody as a member of the finance committee, and Otero as chairman and C’Moya a member of the audit committee.

Smith, 56, enters his second stint as board president, a position he held in 2017. He was first elected to the board in 2015 and represents District 4.

He is a 1981 graduate of Los Luna High School, as is his wife of 34 years.

Smith served in the Navy from 1982-88, much of that time aboard a nuclear submarine. He spent 23 years with the State of New Mexico in the Department of Information Technology, and currently works as a technologist for Sandia National Labs.

He also found time to coach girls basketball for 15 years, five of those as a high school head coach, with four of those at Los Lunas High.

Smith and his wife have three daughters, all Los Lunas graduates, and five grandchildren.
